Dr. Bob Convissar
Dr. Robert A. Convissar — widely known as Dr. Bob Convissar — is one of the world’s foremost authorities on laser dentistry and among the first general dentists to bring lasers into everyday clinical practice, having worked with them since 1990. Over more than three decades he has developed deep, hands-on expertise across the full range of dental laser wavelengths, including CO₂, diode, Nd:YAG, erbium, and photobiomodulation (PBM) lasers. He practices laser, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry in New York City alongside his wife and partner, Dr. Ellen Goldstein, and has served as Director of Laser Dentistry at New York Hospital Queens, a primary teaching affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical School.
Dr. Convissar is celebrated for his engaging, practical, and educational workshops. A gifted teacher, he has delivered more than 300 seminars across five continents and has circumnavigated the globe four times to lecture — from London and Florence to Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Sydney. He is one of only a select few Registered Course Providers eligible to teach Laser Proficiency Courses under the guidelines established at the University of California, San Francisco, making his instruction both authoritative and highly sought after.
He is best known as the editor and author of the seminal textbook Principles and Practice of Laser Dentistry, now in its third edition. Praised for its concise, evidence-based approach, the book covers the clinical use of lasers across periodontics, oral surgery, implantology, endodontics, cosmetic and restorative dentistry, pediatrics, orthodontics, and more, with the latest edition adding chapters on sleep apnea and snoring, photodynamic therapy, and infant tongue-tie procedures. It has been the number-one-selling laser dentistry textbook in the world for well over a decade and has been translated into Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese.
The author of more than a dozen peer-reviewed papers and six textbooks, Dr. Convissar has been honored with Fellowships in the Academy of General Dentistry, the International Academy of Dento-Facial Esthetics, and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, as well as Mastership in the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
